Tracks From The Attic

A sumptuous new three-album release from IPR

reveals new sides to the Bauhaus and Love and Rockets co-founder,

offering aural, visual and tactile pleasures in the process

IP084 David J LP front cover with OBI_ed

Hand-picked by David J himself, this three-volume set was originally released

in a very limited edition as part of Record Store Day’s RSD Black Friday 2023 event,

and is now being made available in a wider, commercial release on vinyl, CD and

through digital distribution services. Featuring solo demos recorded on audio-cassette between 1984 and 2004 the Bauhaus and Love and Rockets co-founder invites listeners

on a most fascinating journey. We’re looking through boxes of tapes, getting reacquainted with an artist we’ve known for a long time - yet, the intimate songs he recorded in solitude over three decades reveal new sides to him. The fact that most of these tunes did not end up becoming beloved classics (something that, once you hit play, your ears will hardly come to terms with) is but a sign of David J’s ever prolific creative state. Tracks From the Attic offers a unique experience that gives equal importance to the aural, the visual and the tactile.

ANNOUNCING THE FIRST-EVER COLLECTION OF SONGS FROM TORN BOYS,

FEATURING GRANT-LEE PHILLIPS AND IPR'S OWN JEFFREY CLARK!

IMG_5096_edited_edited.png

Collecting studio and live recordings, hit singles that never were, and enticing stray oddities all conceived in the span of one fecund year, "1983" chronicles the life and sonic adventure of the Torn Boys, a Stockton, California band comprising future members of Shiva Burlesque, Gary Young's Hospital and Grant Lee Buffalo. It is, in fact, the first ever release from a group made for cultdom. Formed in late '82 by Jeffrey Clark and Kelly Foley, the Torn Boys soon welcomed Duncan Atkinson and then nineteen-year-old Grant-Lee Phillips into their ranks. At once urgent and literate, their recordings fend off basic categorization, conjuring the darker corners of neo-psychedelic California, infusing New Wave-era sensibilities with the moodier angle of home-grown, art-punk-surrealism.

IPR is delighted to share our first ever
digital-only single with you!

Leslie’s Dream

is a rare new recording from Leslie Medford,

the maverick leader of '80s San Francisco psychedelic journeymen The Ophelias.

According to David Fricke (Rolling Stone, MOJO), The Ophelias were "modernists steeped in

the vintage, local ethos of a late set at the Fillmore Auditorium - a potent tab

of futurist acid-pop…laced with post-punk menace."

Savage Republic's extraordinary first time at the Whisky A Go Go

was recorded on cassette on December 30th 1981, a momentous night when soon-to-be Savage Republic had been invited to open for Orange County hardcore-turned-post punk outfit Middle Class along with fellow LA post punk journeymen Afterimage (it was probably the friendship among band members that made it all happen) and Long Beach-based synth punks Outer Circle. We’re lucky enough to witness most of the future Tragic Figures tracks in a process of highly creative gestation, in the middle of being developed. Available now on vinyl and CD!

THREE EXCELLENT RECENT RELEASES:

We are thrilled to offer a remastered, expanded reissue of A Produce’s debut LP, the ambient cult classic originally released in 1988 titled The Clearing. For this first ever replicated CD release we've added 4 bonus tracks, including three of his original recordings from the early 1980's that only previously appeared on the three L.A. Mantra cassette compilations released by Trance Port Tapes between 1983-1985.

Also available now is the first ever (and - does it need to be said? - generously expanded) CD edition of Tape Excavation, a four decade-spanning compilation that dives deep into Independent Project Records & Press, Savage Republic and Scenic founder Bruce Licher’s musical history. This new version features 8 additional bonus tracks beyond what appeared on the original 14-song vinyl LP release from 2020, including never-before heard tracks from Licher's bands Scenic and Savage Republic. Both of these new CD releases come smartly packaged in oversized, letterpress-printed die cut folder packaging complete with 24-page booklets featuring extensive liner notes and previously unseen imagery.

On top of these two CD releases, we’re pleased to announce to anyone who might be looking to treat themselves to some exquisite-looking vinyl that the LP version of last year’s Exploratorium album is finally here! This version of the well-received selection of Bruce Licher’s immersive solo recordings comes in a numbered edition of 600 clear vinyl copies, featuring gorgeous postcard inserts placed in a glassine envelope sealed with a special Exploratorium sticker we’ve made for the occasion.

All three releases are now in stores, or you can order copies shipped direct to your door from the IPR Shoppe by selecting the button below.

NOW AVAILABLE: THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY EXPANDED EDITION OF SAVAGE REPUBLIC’S DEBUT ALBUM
TRAGIC FIGURES

e1014b_9c3bb1eaaf3442b89503d0b8cfd61e89~mv2_edited_edited.jpg

Welcome to the world’s first (and only) post-punk-industrial-trance-psychedelic-surf album!

The fact that it took us so many adjectives to describe Tragic Figures lets you know just how unique of an album it is. The LP brings to mind aspects of PiL, Can, Faust, Flipper, Einstürzende Neubauten, Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca, but really sounds like no one else before or since.

Independent Project Records has collaborated with Real Gone Music on this very special expanded version of Savage Republic’s Tragic Figures LP, complete with an entire second album of mostly previously unreleased recordings taped in 1981.  Copies of both the Deluxe Limited Edition Double LP and Double CD are now available in the IPR shoppe.

IP057HalfString-AFascinationWithHeights_1.jpeg

Half String’s A Fascination With Heights gets a special reissue treatment by Independent Project Records with this newly remastered and expanded version of the band’s first and only full-length release. Filled with beautiful melodies and harmonies, alternately hard-edged and chiming guitars, Heights reveals Half String at their peak in 1995 churning out well crafted songs and their brand of ‘beautiful noise’. Jack Rabid, writing in The Big Takeover has said, "Shell Life and especially Departures set Half String off as the finest from the pack of American bands who've heard their share of U.K. post-Valentine pop-noises..."

 A L I S O N   C L A N C Y   Dreamland Tokyo

Independent Project Records is pleased to present 'Dreamland Tokyo’, Alison Clancy's celebration of creative friendship and intercontinental exchange. Alison wrote the track with artist/director Esteban Haga in mind, when he returned to Tokyo, after working with Alison in NYC on the 'Mutant Gifts' live performance video.  “We had wonderful creative synergy. I felt Esteban totally understood my aesthetic and emotional impulses. I wrote 'Dreamland Tokyo' inspired by a desire to continue a creative relationship with him. I’ve never been to Tokyo, but writing this music was my way of projecting my energy to my friend who was there”. Esteban then filmed a haunting collage of his city in response, and integrated cinematic motion design of Alison's image by Monika Mihaly, a visual artist based in Den Haag, Netherlands.

IMG_9122.jpg

This first release of Independent Project Records’ 2021 relaunch offers a fresh look at four decades of the creative musical underground that IPR founder Bruce Licher has celebrated since his label’s inception in 1980. Now in the 21st century Licher has teamed up with fellow musician Jeffrey Clark to co-create a new era of IPR releases that more deeply explore this rich heritage. These two creative collaborators have compiled this collection, an expansive sonic experience of diverse musical genres. With all of the enclosed tracks united by their keen intuitive clarity, this music is sometimes raw, sometimes refined, and what we love about it the most is that it is always REAL, and always reaching deep into the source of meaning for humanity.
