SCENIC: INCIDENT AT CIMA
IP050
Incident at Cima is the 1995 debut album from SCENIC, the group formed by SAVAGE REPUBLIC and IPR founder Bruce Licher. Conceived as an all-instrumental soundtrack for the East Mojave Desert, Licher is joined by former SHIVA BURLESQUE bassist James Brenner and drummer Brock Wirtz, with guest musicians Jeffrey Clark (SHIVA BURLESQUE vocalist), Robert Loveless (former SAVAGE REPUBLIC and 17 PYGMIES member), Chris Manecke (from the ABECEDARIANS) and John Ganem. Together, they have created an aural masterpiece which has received serious critical acclaim. David Fricke in ROLLING STONE magazine writes that SCENIC's music "suggests Ennio Morricone dune-surfing in Death Valley." Robert Levine in huH magazine describes the album as "a sweeping, swirling (sound) that's full of both darkness and wonder." Grant Alden in RAYGUN says "Incident At Cima plays like futuristic chamber music.
SCENIC: THE ACID GOSPEL EXPERIENCE
IP079
Scenic’s third album sees the all-instrumental group heading into “ambient space rock” territory with the original release of The Acid Gospel Experience in late 2002 as a bonus disc given away with the graphic design magazine Emigre. Released with an alternate tracklisting, and several earlier demo recordings taking the place of two of the final studio versions, this album was sent out to the magazine’s subscribers, introducing Scenic’s music to thousands of new listeners. At the beginning of 2003 The Acid Gospel Experience was officially released on CD in the USA on Hidden Agenda Records and the UK by Tenor Vossa Records.
RED TEMPLE SPIRITS: 3 DISC SET
IP063/IP064/IP065
Independent Project Records is thrilled to announce the long-awaited CD reissue of the two phenomenal albums released by this enigmatic Los Angeles band from the late 1980's: Dancing To Restore An Eclipsed Moon and If Tomorrow I Were Leaving For Lhasa, I Wouldn’t Stay a Minute More...
SAVAGE REPUBLIC:
RECORDINGS FROM LIVE PERFORMANCE 1981-1983
IP038CD
Now available on Compact Disc, this album of early live recordings from SAVAGE REPUBLIC was originally made available in 1992 as a double 10” vinyl release in Independent Project Records’ Archive Series. Recorded during the first two years of the band’s existence, this documentary release includes one track from the group’s first ever live performance in May of 1981, several songs never recorded in the studio or otherwise released, as well as a generous amount of “atmosphere,” consisting of snippets of dialogue, band/audience exchanges, and ambient club noise. All in all, it’s as good a document as you’ll find of the early years of this unique Los Angeles-based band.
JEFFREY CLARK: SHEER GOLDEN HOOKS
IP053
Sheer Golden Hooks is the solo debut album from the former lead singer of Los Angeles-based band Shiva Burlesque, who released two critically-acclaimed albums in the late 1980's. Alan Jones of England's Melody Maker called Shiva Burlesque’s music "A trip into startled wonder."
TAPE EXCAVATION: VARIOUS ARTISTS
IP073
Black vinyl edition of the Tape Excavation compilation LP limited to 200 numbered copies for sale. This 14-song limited edition vinyl LP was created to accompany the deluxe edition of the Savage Impressions book published by P22 in February 2020. Tape Excavation was compiled by Bruce Licher in early 2019 after scouring through dozens of boxes of cassette tapes from rehearsals, demos, and other recordings to find previously unheard nuggets from his various musical endeavors. Dating from his first recordings for Independent Project Records in 1980 to a rehearsal demo of his current musical endeavor SR2, a collaboration with his wife Karen Nielsen Licher, this compilation contains 14 intriguing windows into the ongoing evolution of Licher’s sound and musical vision.
BRUCE LICHER: OWENS VALLEY DRIVING MUSIC
IP072
The first "plein-air" recordings from former Scenic and Savage Republic guitarist Bruce Licher consist of layered guitars and effects recorded at various locations in the Owens Valley using a solar-powered recording setup. Each piece runs approximately 10 minutes and both were written and recorded on site in one afternoon with each location influencing the music created on that day. The tracks were later mixed by Bruce Licher, with one of the songs mastered in 2017 by legendary LA punk musician and producer Geza X.
BRUCE LICHER: EXPLORATORIUM
IP074
Solo ambient guitar home recordings by SAVAGE REPUBLIC, SCENIC, and Independent Project founder Bruce Licher. Recorded in July 1997 on a cassette 4-track, and consisting of layered effected guitars and bass, these recordings sat unreleased for almost a decade. Transferred to digital and mixed in April 2006 by Michael Krassner and Bruce Licher, these three instrumental tracks consist of layers of heavily effected guitars and bass.
