Recordings From Live Performance, 1981 - 1983
Now available on Compact Disc, this album of early live recordings from SAVAGE REPUBLIC was originally made available in 1992 as a double 10” vinyl release in Independent Project Records’ Archive Series. Recorded during the first two years of the band’s existence, this documentary release includes one track from the group’s first ever live performance in May of 1981, several songs never recorded in the studio or otherwise released, as well as a generous amount of “atmosphere,” consisting of snippets of dialogue, band/audience exchanges, and ambient club noise. All in all, it’s as good a document as you’ll find of the early years of this unique Los Angeles-based band.

Savage Republic:
Jamahiriya Democratique et Populaire de Sauvage
Savage Republic’s third album, originally released in 1988 with new drummer Brad Laner (prior to his forming the band Medicine) is a return to a more agressive approach, with ventures into psychedelic and krautrock territory. The band stretches out into a more improvisatory approach on songs such as Tabula Rasa, Spice Fields, and the title track, while also incorporating solid blasts of power with So It Is Written and Lethal Musk. Greek and middle-eastern influences find their way into the procesings with a cover version of an instrumental track from Mikis Theodorakis’ soundtrack to the 1969 Greek political thriller “Z”, Pios Den Mila Yia Ti Lambri and the band-composed Lebanon 2000. Another cover song is a Republicized version of early UK punk group Alternative TV’s Viva La Rock ‘N’ Roll which takes the song in a whole new direction. Bonus tracks include three instrumental mixes of vocal songs from the album along with a short piece created as a promo spot for local radio station KXLU.

Scenic: Incident at Cima"Incident at Cima" is the debut album from SCENIC, the group formed by SAVAGE REPUBLIC and IPR founder Bruce Licher. Conceived of as an all-instrumental soundtrack for the East Mojave Desert, Licher is joined by former SHIVA BURLESQUE bassist James Brenner and drummer Brock Wirtz, with guest musicians Jeffrey Clark (SHIVA BURLESQUE vocalist), Robert Loveless (former SAVAGE REPUBLIC and 17 PYGMIES member), Chris Manecke (from the ABECEDARIANS) and John Ganem. Together, they have created an aural masterpiece which has already received serious critical acclaim. David Fricke in ROLLING STONE magazine writes that SCENIC's music "suggests Ennio Morricone dune-surfing in Death Valley." Robert Levine in huH magazine describes the album as "a sweeping, swirling (sound) that's full of both darkness and wonder." Grant Alden in RAYGUN says "Incident At Cima plays like futuristic chamber music. It is like nothing else on the landscape." And that sums it up pretty well. SCENIC's music is like nothing else on the landscape, and while there is definitely a relation to some of the sounds explored by SAVAGE REPUBLIC during their eight-year existence, SCENIC have created a mature and focused album which is a great leap forward. "Incident at Cima" is an evocative aural journey, a quite listenable and incredibly honest piece of music, and as such it has the potential to be appreciated by a wide range of listeners. The packaging for "Incident at Cima" includes a series of photographs Licher has taken in the East Mojave which relate to the various pieces of music on the album, creating a complete audio/visual experience.
Track list: 1. The Shifting Sand 2. The Kelso Run 3. Incident At Cima4. 4. East Mojave Shuffle 5. Hole In The Wall 6. Carrying On To Cadiz 7. The Mid Hills 8. Down Black Canyon Road 9. Red Temple SpiritsIndependent Project Records is thrilled to announce the long-awaited CD reissue of the two phenomenal albums released by this enigmatic Los Angeles band from the late 1980's: Dancing To Restore An Eclipsed Moon and If Tomorrow I Were Leaving For Lhasa, I Wouldn’t Stay a Minute More... Originally released in 1988 and 1989, these two albums sound like nothing else from the period, deftly blending gothic post-punk sounds with pagan tribal psychedelia. Red Temple Spirits’ debut has been described as a haunting masterpiece of psychedelic post-punk, laden with exotic musicianship and a unique combination of Native American and Eastern mysticism. While shimmering guitar textures weave patterns over heavy hypnotic rhythms, the enchanting lyrical imagery of vocalist William Faircloth brings a trippy, shamanistic quality to the proceedings. Easily some of the most mesmerizing and vital post-punk music ever created, Red Temple Spirits play with an austerity, grace, and pureness to form that remains fresh over two decades after they originally recorded. Dancing To Restore An Eclipsed Moon contains ten powerful originals, and includes what may be the finest cover version extant of Pink Floyd’s Nile Song. The band’s second album has been described as a fully-developed excursion into other realms, with rumbling basslines and slithery guitar washes of elegant brilliance. Once again drawing inspiration from Tibetan and Native American cultures, vocalist Faircloth leads the listener through a tangle of mystical themes while the band (guitarist Dallas Taylor, bassist Dino Paredes and drummer Thomas Pierik) skillfully blend heavy tribal rhythms and etherial guitar, building up to moments of extreme tension. In the UK, Sounds magazine described their song Soft Machine as “a beast of a sucker,” and City of Millions was called “a song many bands have died trying to execute.” In addition to the nine originals, If Tomorrow... also features cover versions of Pink Floyd’s Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun, and 13th Floor Elevators’ Rollercoaster. Both albums have been completely re-mastered, and are supplemented with three bonus tracks (both sides of the New Land single, originally released on Independent Project Records in 1989, along with a previously unreleased later version of the song New Land) and a bonus CDep reproducing the band's first demo tape. Packaged in a deluxe over-sized 4-color hand-letterpress Discfolio package designed by Bruce Licher, with full-color lyric inserts & gilded letterpress-printed glassine inner sleeves, this essential re-issue is released as a limited, numbered edition of 1000 copies.

Lanterna: BackyardsIndependent Project Records is pleased to present a vinyl edition of Backyards, the beautiful new album from Champaign, Illinois’ Lanterna. This 10-song collection is multi-instrumentalist Henry Frayne’s most compelling work to date, where he crafts musical landscapes interweaving layers of warm, instrumental sonic tapestries. For Frayne, the inception of Backyards began almost a decade ago and is a culmination of his career as a versatile musician best known for blending genres and bending guitar styles to create layers of airy overtones.
Behind most of the songs on the Backyards album is an acoustic guitar part written while sitting outside in the open air with a hummed melody later replaced by echoey guitars. Frayne composed the underlying textures of the record with a heavy influence from the Nashville tuning, the practice of utilizing very light strings to produce an angelic sound. Frayne learned this Nashville tuning from bandmate Brendan Gamble during their time in The Moon Seven Times. “As I’ve worked on Backyards I was drawn to some old live recordings of The Syndicate, Ack-Ack, Area, and The Moon Seven Times, bands I played with in the past,” Frayne explains. Lanterna’s music has always been about taking a journey through sound, and there are echoes of these four groups all over this new album.
